Your moment

Time optional

The moon changes slowly, so the date is enough. If you give a time it is printed beneath the date.

02

Your place

Printed beneath the date. It also decides which way round the moon is drawn: from the southern hemisphere a waxing moon lights up on the left.

Made to order in South Africa. We confirm the details and the dispatch date by email, and take payment by EFT.

The right moon

The phase is calculated for the date and time you give, to within a fraction of a percent of illumination. New, crescent, quarter, gibbous or full, it is the moon that was actually up that night.

The right way round

From South Africa the moon looks upside down compared with pictures from the north. A waxing moon fills in from the left. We draw it the way you saw it.

Printed to last

Heavyweight archival matte paper, printed by a South African fine-art printer. Framed pieces arrive glazed and ready to hang; delivery anywhere in South Africa is included.

Questions
What if the date was a new moon?
Then the piece shows a new moon: a dark disc with the faintest edge, printed in the same design. It is a quieter piece and some people love it for exactly that. If you would rather show the moon from the night before or after, change the date and watch it change.
Where does the moon image come from?
It is NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mosaic of the near side, the face we see from Earth, with the shadow for your night laid over it. The dark side stays faintly visible, as it does in a photograph.
Does the time matter?
Only a little. The moon's shape changes by about three percent a day, so the date alone gives the right moon. If you know the time we use it, and it is printed beneath the heading.
How do I pay, and how long does it take?
When you send an order we email you to confirm the piece, the delivery details and the dispatch date, along with our banking details for EFT. Your piece goes into production once payment clears. Delivery anywhere in South Africa is included in the price.
